Program Description:

Dublin ireland
Travel Journalism in Dublin

Travel to Dublin, Ireland and be immersed in an exciting travel-writing course that focuses on subjects that are both timeless and timely. Learn to develop strong stories for print and the web, how to pitch articles to editors and other practical tools needed to work in the field.

Program Location

Dublin, Ireland (weekend trip to Galway with a food tour, bus to the Cliffs of Moher and Burren tour, ferry to Aran Islands). A manual will be provided for details of security, medical and insurance coverage, voltage, etc.

Program Director and Course Leaders

Instructor: Dr. Leara Rhodes. 
Dr. Rhodes has taken students on study abroad courses to Croatia, Tanzania, Italy, England, Trinidad and Tobago, and Haiti. She taught two Maymester courses at Trinity College at Oxford University, Oxford, England. She has published two books and numerous journal and magazine articles during her career first as a working journalist and then as a professor of journalism and international communication at the Grady College since 1994.

Academic Program

Students will arrive in Dublin on May 28, 2018
Students will leave Ireland to head home on June 20th, 2018. 

Housing and Meals

Housing for Dublin will be at the University College Dublin with ensuite single bedrooms in quads of 4 and 6 with a shared living and kitchen area. Students are expected to pay for their own meals throughout the duration of the program. However, a welcome and closing dinner will be scheduled at no out-of-pocket expense to students.

Program Costs

The program costs vary from year to year depending on number of students enrolled, exchange rates, and logistical cost changes. The total cost for Summer 2018 hasn’t been determined at this time and is subject to change slightly from what is advertised to students. For Summer 2017 the PROGRAM FEE was $2,600  (this includes the $300 security deposit paid upon acceptance to the program). In addition to the program fee, students are expected to pay 3 hours of In-state tuition and UGA Mandatory Fees through their Athena student accounts after registration. The HOPE and Zell Miller scholarships can be applied towards TUITION only if applicable. **non-UGA transient students may have an additional $250 fee upon registration**

The program fee listed above includes the following:
- 3 weeks lodging at University College Dublin dorms in Dublin, Ireland
- Travel Health Insurance
- Opening and Closing Dinner celebration
- Some faculty related expenses
- Program related excursions and activities
- Miscellaneous minor program expenses

The program fee listed above does NOT include:
- 3 hours of in-state tuition and UGA Mandatory fees (In 2017 3 hours of in-state tuition was $936 + $546 mandatory fees)
- International airfare (Typically around $1,200 - $1,500)
- Ground transportation while in each City (personal travel)
- Meals
- Books
- Laundry
- Personal Purchases
- Passport cost if the student does not have one already
- Miscellaneous expenses
- Optional weekend excursion to Galway (price of this is TBD but will be paid to the program leader upon request if interested in participating)


Note: Students should budget for all expected expenses prior to arriving on the program. It is the student’s responsibility to keep up with how much they are spending so that they don’t run out of money before the program ends.
