LACSI Graduate Field Research Award Competition

The University of Georgia Latin American and Caribbean Studies Institute (LACSI) is pleased to announce its 2017 Graduate Field Research Award Competition.  Travel awards are granted to highly qualified graduate students from any discipline interested in conducting preliminary graduate field research in the Spanish or Portuguese-speaking Latin American and Caribbean region, excluding Puerto Rico, during summer 2017.  Awards may be used for international airfare and in-country travel, as well as associated country entry/exit fees, travel insurance, visas, etc. All masters or doctoral students with an interest in carrying out graduate research in Latin America are encouraged to apply.  The deadline for submission of all application elements is 5:00 PM Friday, March 24, 2017.  Award recipients will be notified during the week of April 3-7, 2017.
 
Please note, while it is not required, preference is given to applicants who have applied for the LACSI graduate certificate.  Information on the LACSI graduate certificate is found at: http://www.lacsiuga.org/graduate-certificate-requirements/.  Awards may be used for international airfare, in-country travel, lodging, as well as associated country entry/exit fees, travel insurance, visas, etc.

DEADLINE FOR LACSI GRADUATE FIELD RESEARCH AWARD COMPETITION

All application materials must be submitted electronically by no later than 5:00 PM Friday, March 24, 2017.  

GUIDELINES AND ELIGIBILITY FOR APPLICATION

  1. Applicant must be an enrolled graduate student and maintain satisfactory academic progress as defined by the University of Georgia.
  2. Master’s or doctoral students in the preliminary stages of graduate study with little or no international field research experience are encouraged to apply.
  3. Graduate students from all University of Georgia colleges and schools are encouraged to apply.
  4. Applicant must have adequate Spanish or Portuguese language skills to be able to independently carry out research activities in the target country.  Language assessments for Spanish and Portuguese can be done through the UGA Romance Languages department via Teresa Perez Gamboa (perezt@uga.edu) for Spanish and LACSI staff/TAs for Portuguese. (email LACSI’s Paul Duncan (pduncan@uga.edu) to arrange Portuguese assessment if not native speaker).  Paul Duncan can also be contacted to carry out Spanish language assessments.
