Academic Program

UGA - Social Work - MSW in Social Work - Field Practicum

Course Offerings
     June/July 2016

SOWK 7055
The field practicum provides MSW students the opportunity to apply the social work knowledge and skills gained in the classroom in an experiential learning setting in an international environment. A variety of actual practice settings are available with people of different ages with different types of needs. Students will be placed in a social service agency that is matched to their practice area of interest. Students will develop an individualized Learning Plan for their experience and will meet with a MSW field instructor on a weekly basis for on-going supervision. Forty hours in pre-departure study about the culture and history of Ghana will occur during May. Students will work in an agency in Ghana for eight weeks Monday through Thursday and spend Fridays with the MSW field instructor for field trips and supervision during June and July. SOWK 7055 is taken for 6 credits.

SOWK 7908
The field practicum experience can also be completed as an independent study for elective credit in the MSW program. This opportunity is similar to SOWK 7055 but the required time working in a social service agency in Ghana is reduced to six weeks. Students will spend Fridays each week with the MSW field instructor for field trips and supervision. SOWK 7908 is taken for 3 credits.
