universidad de montevideo 2With a population of 1.5 million, Montevideo is the capital and cultural center of Uruguay. Situated on the northern banks of Rio de la Plato, it combines Latin American character with a European atmosphere. Home to the mate drink, cowboys called gauchos, the world’s longest Carnival and condombe, a farm of Afro-Uruguayan music, Montevideo boasts a rich cultural tradition.

Montevideo is only a short drive from Colonia del Sacramento, a UNESCO World Heritage city, and Punta del Este, a renowned coastal resort. Buenos Aires, Santiago de Chile and Sao Paulo are easily accessible from Montevideo by plane or bus.

Housing

The Universidad de Montevideo does not provide on-campus housing. However the Office of International Affairs sends out a housing list before the beginning of every semester with multiple choices of living situations such as international residences, house stays and independent rooms to rent. It is strongly recommended to arrange your permanent housing in Montevideo once you have arrived. It is our suggestion that you book a hostel for the beginning of your stay so that you may search for appropriate housing during your first weeks here.
