Final Reflection Questions
What were the most significant take-aways from your experience?
There are so many ways of life in this world. The most important aspect of helping others is to first understand their beliefs and practices, and the reasoning behind them.
— Julia Adams, Summer 2017
What were the most significant take-aways from your experience?
I learned so much about subjects I had never even heard of before: surf tourism, ecotourism, the growth of towns and countries, and so much more!
— Evan Alden, Summer 2017
What were the most significant take-aways from your experience?
This program has an incredible focus on critical thinking and analysis. We were challenged to analyze our own beliefs, and left every class discussion questioning everything we knew about everything. It was exhausting and challenging, but the way we were taught to think during our discussions is something I feel privileged to have experienced, and I am glad to take that experience into the rest of my studies.
— Emily Cardin, Summer 2017

What are your words of advice to students considering this program?
It's an incredible program, regardless of your major. You'll be challenged to think critically, and you will experience so much more than you imagined you could in one month's time.
— Emily Cardin, Summer 2017
How did the experience impact you and your future educational/career/personal goals?
i figured out what i want to do for the rest of my life and it introduced me to surfing which is probably the greatest thing i could have asked for.
— Autumn Summers, Summer 2016
How did the experience impact you and your future educational/career/personal goals?
This month changed my life. As a sustainable development major, this trip pertained to every single class I take for my major. It gave me real life experience and developed my understanding of what I learn in the classroom. I have gotten internships due to my experience gained on this trip and have become much more confident in my endeavors due to all that I learned from Pete and Tara.
— Julia Adams, Summer 2017
How did the experience impact you and your future educational/career/personal goals?
When we learned about Costa Rica's water and waste systems, I realized how much I care about that as a public health issue. Now I know I would be happy working to improve these systems in areas where it is not serving its residents and visitors in the ways that it should.
— Evan Alden, Summer 2017
How did the experience impact you and your future educational/career/personal goals?
This program was my first academic exposure to sustainability and conservation. I learned and experienced so much that made me reflect on my own waste management habits at home. This was also my first experience surfing, and it is a skill that I am so excited I was able to explore and a culture that is extremely unique.
