I found the Ghana culture book I read before entering Ghana extremely helpful and gave me an insight to why people did certain things. This was useful to me because I knew what was considered rude for me to do or not do so I did not offend anyone and made friends easily.

Felt totally comfortable the whole time

Kendall Rose Taylor, Summer 2016 Participant
I loved all the excursions we did, and I also felt safe. I loved how we did most of the excursions the first week because it was a good way to adjust before we got to work.

Summer 2016 Participant
I never felt like I was in danger. Traveling in the day light should always be a priority if it can be helped though.

Summer 2016 Participant
I never once felt unsafe while abroad. Our professor was with us the majority of the time or w were in the capable hands of family members and friends of his. We traveled using consistent drivers who I trusted with my life, and they truly cared about our safety. The means of transportation were reliable and safe though the infrastructure was not. The home in which we stayed was gated and comfortable- we were given boundaries and felt extremely comfortable in the welcoming community that was just up the hill. Overall, I can confidently say I never once questioned my safety while abroad because I was surrounded by people that would offer protection and places that were not unsafe in the slightest.

I felt very safe the entire stay in Ghana.

Good balance of service learning but still having discussions and reflections on what we were learning

Summer 2016 Participant
From facilitated discussion to private reflection, I believe that the workload and general academics was up to UGA's standards and provided me with not only new academic knowledge of medical, nutritional, and patient care techniques, but also with new knowledge of myself in a personal and professional settings.

Rachel Marie Cleypool, Summer 2017 Participant
The school work all related to exactly what we were there on the service learning abroad experience for. I was very happy with how we got to gather our own thoughts on the experience.

Summer 2017 Participant
I thought the amount of work was perfect for the trip and I truly feel like I learned more about the country and myself. I felt the book discussions were enlightening and enjoyed discussing social/health topics with those of a different mindset/opinion.

Summer 2017 Participant
We had several paper which challenged me to become a better writer.

Summer 2016 Participant
I loved getting to visit all of the regions except for the topmost northern ones. I highly recommend visiting Volta!

Summer 2016 Participant
Perfection. We had a nice balance of historical and academic sites with nature exploration/enjoyment opportunities. Because we visited places on both sides of the spectrum, I felt that the trip was well balanced and allowed for adequate relaxation along with the chance to learn new information.I also got to see some pretty awesome wild animals and sites throughout the ENTIRE country of Ghana.

Rachel Marie Cleypool, Summer 2017 Participant
Our group got to visit multiple towns and villages where we would have never thought to go on our own. The excursion experiences the first week there and the following few weekends really helped me to explore the country more.

Chandler Marie Winstead, Summer 2017 Participant
Phenomenal excursions out in Ghana. I couldn't have asked for more.

Ms. Margaret became our adoptive mother throughout the trip. She made sure that we were safe, happy and well cared for ever day of the week. She did all of our laundry, cooked all of our meals, and cleaned up the messes we made. I really do not know how this trip would have transpired without her and her willingness to house us at the family home. I am so thankful for the support she provided and the roof she put over our head.

Ashley Brooke Adams, Summer 2017 Participant
Housing was so nice!!

Rachel Marie Cleypool, Summer 2017 Participant
We had very nice living conditions that were well thought through.

Chandler Marie Winstead, Summer 2017 Participant
The house was amazing and very accommodating to 12 girls.

Summer 2016 Participant
While we were not provided lunch at anytime on the trip, we were well taken care of for breakfast and dinner. I would leave every meal satisfied whether from Ms. Margaret kitchen or from a restaurant around the country, As long as I stayed away from food sold on the street from unreliable vendors, every meal was golden.

You were always surrounded by opportunities to interact and learn about local culture. It was impossible not to.

Summer 2016 Participant
It was up to us to seek interaction with the culture and people of the area, and while we may not have taken advantage of those opportunities, they were available. Through the program, we were able to interact with many as they attended our clinics, and I learned so much in those moments. As we began to branch out more towards the end of the trip, we became more comfortable in our setting and learned even more about their culture and felt more accepted in the community.

Rachel Marie Cleypool, Summer 2017 Participant
This was perfect. We got the chance to interact one on one with the people in each place we traveled. I have learned an extreme amount from these sweet, life-loving Ghanaians.

Summer 2017 Participant
Everyday was an opportunity to interact with the local culture. We were talking to people everyday.

Summer 2016 Participant
Dr. Anderson is incredible. I honestly do not know how he maintained the energy to facilitate, teach, and protect twelve girls for a month.

Summer 2016 Participant
Dr. Anderson was so amazing and supportive of everyone on this trip. Not only did he keep us all in line, he pushed us to try new things and have new experiences. And he planned everything so that we were in the safest environment possible with ultimate comfort and knowledge to be gained.

Rachel Marie Cleypool, Summer 2017 Participant
Dr. Anderson is good at knowing what he is doing with us since it has been around 10 years that he has gone on this program. It is aggravating when he chooses not to inform us about important things though, such as being sure to leave our valuables behind and only take minimal things to the hospitals when we thought we could lock them away.

Summer 2016 Participant
Dr. Anderson is amazing. He maintained the perfect balance of being a teacher and a caretaker.

Summer 2016 Participant
Dr. Anderson took full responsibility for us while abroad and made sure that we were comfortable around him so that we could voice our grievances and questions and he would address them in an efficient acceptable way.

Ashley Brooke Adams, Summer 2017 Participant
This program is invaluable I learned so much and got so much real life experience.

Summer 2017 Participant
This trip exceeded my expectations. I was worried about the accommodations and conditions of the country but it turned out to be better than I expected. Additionally, I feel like I finally got the chance to apply what I've learned in class to a real patient setting. I also developed critical thinking skills through book discussions, reflective writing opportunities, and shadowing experiences.

Anna Eleanor Murphy, Summer 2017 Participant
This trip exceed my exceptions completely. The activities we were able to do changed my life and I never could have imagined I would have learned so much in such a short time. Dr. Anderson put an amazing group together which also really added to the experience. Everyone that was there was caring, hardworking, and excited about immersing themselves in the culture.

Summer 2017 Participant
This program exceeded my expectations and set the bar extremely high for future study abroad trips.

Summer 2017 Participant
This program was truly incredible. Everything was very organized and the benefits from this trip were out of this world! I loved how we got to see so many different parts of Ghana and had a good amount of time to go explore the country outside of just doing school work.

Summer 2016 Participant
This was such a valuable program that I'm so thankful is offered at UGA. It is unlike any other study abroad option I have ever encountered and everything I learned and experienced was so valuable, it was the opportunity of a lifetime.

Summer 2016 Participant
This program was a hectic, once-in-a-lifetime experience and I am so glad to have been a part of it.

Summer 2017 Participant
I wish I could do this program every year. I had the chance to just focus on healthcare, tourism, meeting new people, and overcoming fears.

Chandler Marie Winstead, Summer 2017 Participant
Trip is incredible. I would go back in a heart beat.

Summer 2016 Participant
Advise for future participants- Be prepared to be uncomfortable sometimes, but lean into the discomfort and learn from it because it will help you grow and enhance your experience more than you could ever imagine. Growth comes from being outside of your comfort zone.

Summer 2016 Participant
Consider donating most of what you bring for the trip. This is what I did, and I only had to fly back with my backpack and a duffle bag. You're doing a great thing, and it's more convenient for you too!

Summer 2016 Participant
I think that students who come on this trip should be prepared for and expectant of more than just medical experience.

Summer 2016 Participant
Take advantage of every opportunity you have to emerge yourself in the community while abroad. The people of Ghana are so kind and have so much wisdom that needs to be shared. Truly get comfortable with the uncomfortable to enjoy this experience as much as possible.

Summer 2017 Participant
Travel smart. Stick to the buddy system, pack light but efficiently (a sleep sack was a great investment), take care of your health (that includes medication and personal well-being), and bring a variety of snacks.

Chandler Marie Winstead, Summer 2017 Participant
I would warn the people that go on the trip that Verizon does not have an international plan for Ghana and that they need to be prepared to buy a phone while there or bring money to add data to the motem.

Summer 2016 Participant
My trip to Ghana gave me confidence to pursue medicine but also reminded me that the most important thing is how we love others and appreciate our differences

Summer 2016 Participant
This service-learning program provided me an opportunity of a lifetime to give back to a community that gave me so much in return.

Summer 2016 Participant
This trip offered an amazing opportunity to learn about the culture of Ghana and the field of medicine. I would highly recommend the Ghana Service Learning Program for someone who wants to experience hands-on patient interaction, a wide variety of shadowing options, the spectacular people of Ghana, and a little bit of adventure!

Aniya Karion Hamilton, Summer 2016 Participant
Come to Ghana with an open mind and open heart and it will reveal to you all of its hidden jewels

Summer 2016 Participant
This trip completely changed my world view.

Summer 2016 Participant
"A trip that will change your perspective and allow you to grow and learn so much about yourself in just four short weeks."

Summer 2016 Participant
This trip was an exciting introduction to the people, animals, and landscape of Ghana that offered medical opportunities that you won't find in the United States.

Kendall Rose Taylor, Summer 2016 Participant
If you want to study abroad to simply have fun, this is not the trip for you. This trip is about being challenged, learning the nobility of serving, discovering yourself, recognizing your true passions, and creating memories that will impact your life forever. You will embark on this trip with intentions of helping others, but you will walk away from this experience realizing that you had the most to gain.

Summer 2016 Participant
This program was incredible. I do not think this trip is for everyone. You have to be fairly easy going and fully prepared and excited to jump into a completely different world where nothing is familiar and you are the minority. Those aspects are what makes this trip so unique and worthwhile. This trip is a chance you will never have on your own because we have the chance to travel Ghana with Dr. Anderson, a local who has tons of friends and family that want to host and meet us. This trip is a chance to learn and experience a part of the world not many people have hd the opportunity to see.

Summer 2016 Participant
Going abroad was one of the best experiences of my life. I gained invaluable knowledge and made memories all while gaining a newfound appreciation for the availability of common luxuries and lifestyles in America.

Ashley Brooke Adams, Summer 2017 Participant
This program is invaluable I learned so much and got so much life experience in both healthcare and learning about a culture completely different from my own.

Rachel Marie Cleypool, Summer 2017 Participant
If you are on the pre-medical track, I would highly suggest this program. The quality of exposure to third world medical issues and hands-on experiences is genuine and informative. It will be a month long service learning experience you will be telling friends and family about for years and years!

Summer 2017 Participant
This program pushed me farther out of my comfort zone than anything I have ever experienced. It challenged me not only to understand a completely different culture, but to analyze my background, beliefs, and career goals as well. The community service we performed and the shadowing experiences we had is a great way for any student considering a health profession to explore the medical field.

Anna Eleanor Murphy, Summer 2017 Participant
My trip to Ghana was truly a one in a lifetime opportunity that taught me more in four short weeks than I could have learned in years in a classroom.

Summer 2017 Participant
"Going to Ghana is a life changing experience"; "One of the most immersive trips I have been on"; "Do this program and you won't regret it"; "If you are thinking of doing any health-related career, apply for this trip"; "Ghana be a good time"

Summer 2017 Participant
This program has been one of the best decisions of my life

Chandler Marie Winstead, Summer 2017 Participant
"Ghana can change your life from the inside out. The people are inspirational and the experiences are like nothing you could ever imagine. I am walking from this trip knowing what I want to do with my life."
